“A teacher does not provide services” – 10 qualities of a modern educator

Together with Mikhail Shelkov, the editorial staff of Mel looked into what makes a teacher advanced and modern.

Mikhail Shelkov, creator of the Empathy Foundation:

“A school is not part of the service industry, and a teacher is not a contractor providing services. He or she teaches, helps, acts as a mentor. However, this is not a single party, but a team game. It is important that the student also recognizes themselves as the author of their own education and takes an active position in this process.”

10 qualities of a modern educator:

  • Use of technology
  • Creativity
  • Self-development and professional development
  • Communication skills and teamwork
  • Humanity and simplicity
  • Self-irony
  • Striving to be on the same wavelength with children
  • Empathy and reflection
  • Participation in profile competitions and conferences
  • Conflict resolution

These qualities helped 33 Tula teachers to win the competition “Teaching as a Calling”, organized by the Empathy Foundation with the active participation of its founder Mikhail Shelkov, together with the governor of the Tula Region, Alexey Dyumin. The foundation supports key projects in education, culture and science. Responsible, communicative and creative teachers shared 7 million rubles (100 000 USD) from Empathy. Three winners in each of the 11 categories received awards. A total of 214 teachers from the Tula Region took part in the contest “Teaching as a Calling”. They presented their training courses and modern teaching methods.
