Where to land: what landing sites on the Moon have been chosen for NASA astronauts

Russian Traveler about the astronauts' flight to the Moon in 2025, as well as about the Summer Space School.

This year Empathy became a partner of the School for the first time, sending the youngest participants – schoolchildren from the Sverdlovsk region who dreamed of learning more about our universe. Mikhail Shelkov, the founder of the Foundation, considers the support of young talents to be one of the key areas of the Foundation’s work.

NASA published a list of thirteen areas of the South Pole of the Moon, suitable for landing astronauts mission Artemis (“Artemis”). Each of the 13 proposed landing sites meets several criteria: has dimensions of about 15 by 15 kilometers, contains several potential landing sites with a radius of about 100 meters and is located a short distance from the South Pole.

Today, Artemis is one of the most anticipated space programs because it is the first time since 1972 that humans can set foot on the lunar surface again.

Summer Space School - 2022

While flights to the Moon and even more so to Mars seem possible only in movies, for real space enthusiasts there is a chance to become a crew member of an interplanetary expedition with the help of a computer simulation. It gives an opportunity to participate in a space flight as it is seen by astronauts piloting the spacecraft and Mission Control Center operators planning maneuvers for the spacecraft, monitoring the state of onboard systems and the execution of the flight plan.

The simulation of the Korolev spacecraft flight to Mars was the end of the Summer Space School (SSS – 2022) in Moscow this summer. This educational program has been organized by a team of enthusiasts for 7 years already. This year during 9 days more than 80 lectures were held for 120 participants, including speeches of 5 cosmonauts, radio communication session with the ISS and teleconference with Vostochny Cosmodrome.
